About the Reaction leaderboard

Reaction is the one mode with no fixed length, so this board does not rank WPM — it ranks survival. You start with five seconds. Every completed word buys a little more, five clean words in a row pays a bonus, and the first mistyped key in a word takes some back. The run ends when the clock does, so how long you lasted is the score.

That changes what good play looks like. In a timed test you can absorb a slow word and make it up later; here a slow word is time you never get back, and the clock is capped so you cannot bank a comfortable lead. The real cost of a mistake is not the small time penalty but the broken streak, which forfeits the bonus you were building toward.

Reaction leaderboard FAQs

Why is this board ranked by time instead of WPM?

Because survival time is the actual objective. Reaction runs have no fixed length — the clock is the game — so how long you kept it alive is the meaningful score. WPM is still recorded for each run and shown alongside.

How fast do I need to be to gain time?

On a clean streak the break-even is about 1150ms per word, because the streak bonus amortises to roughly an extra 0.4s per word on top of the 0.75s each word earns. With the streak broken, break-even drops to 750ms — which is why protecting the streak matters more than the typo penalty itself.
