The number row is the least practised part of the keyboard for most people and the most important for anyone doing data entry, finance or accounting work. This board ranks runs on random digit strings, which is a genuinely different skill from typing letters — the reach is longer, the feedback is weaker, and there is no vocabulary to help you predict what comes next.
That unpredictability is the point. When typing words, your hands anticipate; with random digits they cannot, so every keystroke has to be located. If you work with numbers regularly and have never drilled the number row deliberately, this is usually the single largest untapped speed gain available to you.
Prefer to train rather than compete? The Numbers practice page has the full guide to this drill, or browse all practice modes.
For sustained numeric data entry a keypad is faster, but the number row is what you have on a laptop and what you need when digits are mixed into text. This mode drills the row, since that is the skill most people lack.
Because random digits cannot be anticipated. Word typing relies heavily on prediction — your hands begin the next letters before you consciously read them — and random numbers remove that advantage entirely.
Every mode ranks separately — scores are only comparable within one.
